Singapore badminton – Loh Kean Yew wins World Championship, eyes Olympics medal. On Sunday (Dec 19), Local badminton player Loh Kean Yew made history, becoming the first Singapore BWF World Champion, and he immediately declared his next ambition – to win an Olympic medal.
India’s Srikanth Kidambi 21-15, 22-20 was beaten by the world No 22 in the men’s singles final in Huelva, Spain, a flower in the cap for Kean Yew’s stunning run which saw him knock out several top names en route to the crown.
Loh emerged into prominence when he beat badminton superstar Lin Dan at the 2019 Thailand Open final, and shown a penchant for giant-killings since then.
He has beaten world No 1 Axelsen (World Championships), world No 2 Kento Momota (Indonesia Open), world No 3 Anders Antonsen (World Championships) and world No 4 Chou Tien Chen (Hylo Open), all in the last two months.
He has also beaten world No 10 Rasmus Gemke twice (Hylo Open and Indonesia Open) and world No 7 Lee Zii Jia (French and Hylo Open), outside the world’s top five.
With his world-champion status, it also means that he will no longer be a plucky underdog going into future tournaments, and also the top-10 ranking. Loh said he is prepared to keep working hard and not rest on his laurels.
“Now that I have reached this stage, I am sure people will now start re-watching my matches and study my game in more detail, I will therefore have to keep working hard to make sure that I continue improving so that I would be able to face the challenges coming up.” said Loh.
Big Congrats once again to Kean Yew for his Championship win! Best luck ahead in your preparations for the Olympics and may you shine and fly the Singapore flag high.
