US reports over 1 million new Covid-19 cases in a single day – 1,082,549 new cases was reported on Monday following the long New Year’s weekend in the United States.
According to CDC estimates, the Covid-19 Omicron variant B.1.1.529, was detected in about 95.4% of all new cases for the week of 26th December to 1st January, and 4.6% were the delta variant.
Monday’s number of cases reported tend to be higher than other days of the week, due to delays in weekend tallying, especially taking into account a three day long holiday weekend.
Hospitalizations more relevant than number of overall cases
Currently, there are 112,941 Americans hospitalized with COVID-19, of which 26% of ICU beds are occupied by COVID-19 patients.
“almost a vertical increase” in cases and that even a relatively lower rate of hospitalizations could strain already overwhelmed hospitals.

“We have got to be careful about that, because, even if you have a less of a percentage of severity, when you have multi-multi-multi-fold more people getting infected, the net amount is you’re still going to get a lot of people that are going to be needing hospitalization,” Fauci explained. “And that’s the reason why we’re concerned about stressing and straining the hospital system.”
